Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic
Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by
the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It
includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes.
I like to think of it as using parts from one item, to make a totally different item that the first item was not intended to be.
The pens pictured below were made with thin sheets of the respective metals, usually copper, tin or aluminum, and encased in super hard, super clear acrylic. The end result is a patchwork pen that looks like it has been repaired with whatever material was at hand, and should have a texture to it, but happens to be smooth as glass.
